The Artist - Lee Hadwin

Welsh–Australian artist Lee Hadwin is globally recognised for a truly unique and extraordinary phenomenon that has both baffled scientists, intrigued the media, and captivated the art world: he can only create authentic art while asleep. Without any formal training, and lacking artistic ability or interest when awake, Lee produces strikingly detailed portraits, figures, and landscapes entirely in his sleep. This rare, unexplained talent has led to him being described by critics, galleries, and international media outlets alike as “one of a kind.”

Lee began ‘sleep-drawing’ at the tender age of four, although it wasn’t until his early teenage years that these sketches evolved into more complex and intricate artworks. From early scribbles on bedroom walls to emotionally rich and detailed pieces on canvas, his sleep-driven creative sessions gradually transformed into unique artistic events. Over time, he has used whatever materials were within reach — such as coal, crayons, pens, and paints — leaving behind art not only on paper but also on walls, furniture, clothing, and even newspapers.

Today, Lee keeps a variety of sketchbooks and art materials scattered around his home, always prepared for when inspiration strikes unexpectedly in the middle of the night. His remarkable pieces have since become highly sought-after by collectors, celebrities, world leaders, and art dealers all over the world. With numerous international exhibitions, television features, and a book currently in development, his profile continues to rise steadily on the global art stage.

More than just a fascinating mystery, Lee’s remarkable body of work challenges traditional views of consciousness, creativity, and innate talent. His art opens the door to a deeper conversation about the subconscious mind, exploring the hidden layers of human potential that lie beyond waking awareness.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)

Q: Do you really create your art while asleep?
Yes. I have no ability or desire to draw while awake — all my artworks are produced while I'm in a sleep state, often during periods of sleepwalking.

Q: Are you aware of what you're creating?
No. I usually wake up to find the drawings after the fact. I only know what I’ve created when I see it in the morning.

Q: How do you prepare for a sleep-drawing session?
I don’t plan them. But over time, I’ve learned to keep sketchbooks and materials ready around my home, just in case inspiration strikes during the night.

Q: Has this been studied by scientists or sleep experts?
Yes. I’ve worked with sleep researchers, neurologists, and psychologists over the years. The condition remains largely unexplained.

Q: Can I buy your work or commission a piece?
Originals and limited edition prints are occasionally available for sale. Commissions are not possible in the traditional sense, as I can’t control what or when I create — but we can discuss your interest and explore what’s possible.
